What is a blog?

Many people confuse blogs with other forms of writing. Blogs are a style or type of writing. Blogs can range in size but often stay between 400-1,200 words. Blogs can include a variety of content and can be used for any purpose. So when it comes to blog strategies for your business, It’s important to maintain consistent content to help keep your business on your reader’s mind.

Blog strategies for business: What do I blog about?

Blog topics range from content information to product information and beyond. Whatever your area of expertise, you use your blog to provide value to your customers and potential customers. You might have

  • how-to blogs
  • product or process informational blogs
  • product or process persuasive blogs
  • antedote, or story, blogs
  • problem-solving blogs
  • strategizing blogs

Whatever topic you deal with on occasion or regularly, you can blog about!

First steps

To start, I suggest making a list of all of the products or services you offer. Then, make a list of questions (small and large) you have been asked about each product or service. You now have a list of topics (the questions) to blog about.

Writing the blog

Many business owners get caught up in how to write a blog. They get so caught up that they don’t write. Instead, focus on audience, content, and format.

Audience

Who is your audience? Consider

  • Who will see the blog?
  • Who needs to know what I am providing?
  • What do they already know?
  • What do they need to know?
  • What do they think they know that they probably don’t?
  • What will they be offended by?
  • Why are they coming to my blog?

These considerations will help you in tailoring your language on the topic and formatting the blog content for the audience.

Content

What content are you writing about? Consider

  • What you already know
  • What you do not know
  • What you need to know
  • What information others will trust and understand
  • Where you can find other information on the topic
  • How that information can be clearly communicated

These considerations will help you match the format of the content to the audience.

Format

What format will you use? Consider

  • A header
  • Subheadings
  • Short, direct sentences
  • Short, concise paragraphs
  • Conversational tone
  • Bullet points when possible
  • Visual aids (images or diagrams)

The format of your blog does not need to be complicated as long as your audience will understand it.

I don’t have time to blog.

If you are struggling to find the time to write your blog, you can always hire someone else to do it. The person you hire doesn’t have to be an industry expert like you. Instead, a strong writer will ask you questions and do research to write your blogs. They can even ghostwrite to match your voice. If you’re struggling with topics, a writer can help you research and find topics as well.

Ultimately, the benefit of having a blog will have an overwhelmingly positive impact on your business.
