How to motivate yourself in business

How to motivate yourself in business

Full disclosure here.

Running a business is difficult.

Running a business and family at the same time is even more difficult.

There are so many day-to-day components that make owning your own business stressful and exhausting. Some days, it’s difficult to gather the motivation to get up and keep going.

That’s why I put together some strategies to help you motivate yourself in business.

Find a coach

Coaches are a great motivator, but they are also great at making sure you aren’t just being lazy. Coaches have been in the business longer than you, so they have tools and experiences that you don’t. They can use those tools and experiences to motivate you, warn you, and encourage you.

Find a support system

Support systems come in a variety of forms, but they are excellent at encouraging and motivating us to do our best, be our best, and show our best. Whether your support system is a group of online entrepreneurs or business owners, a face-to-face group who gets together for coffee and complaints, or a group tied directly to your coach, a support system with several people motivates and encourages us.

Create a start and end time to your day

Creating a start and end time to your day is essential in motivating yourself, but it can be difficult if you’re working from home. By creating that start time, you know when you need to wake up, go through your morning routine, and even when you should probably go to bed the night before. That schedule helps motivate you to get moving. Having an end time to your day is even more motivating. That is a time when you get to put all work away and focus on your family or friends. Keep in mind that it’s important to have down time, so the end time is usually more important than the start time. But both together motivates you to get your work done.

Create segments and rewards

Segments are separations in your day, but they work well when coupled with rewards. First, create a list of things you do regularly. I like to section my list into four categories: client work, my business, family work, and me. Anything for clients goes in client work. Anything for my business goes in my business. Anything for my household or family goes into family work. (NOTE: That does not include spending time with family. It includes making doctor’s appointments, paying bills, calling a plumber, etc. All things that need to be done during the day.) I also set aside some time for myself each day.

At the beginning of each week, I will segment the days. It’s never evenly split into four, and client work usually takes precedence since it’s what is paying the bills. The best part about making my schedule each week is that it can change and adjust how I need and want it to.

Finally, I add a reward for myself after I complete a segment. For example, I might have a large project I’m working on that needs to be completed by 2 pm. From 2-2:30 pm, I’ll reward myself with a coffee break. If I finish earlier, I’ll reward myself with a coffee and a scone.

Schedule vacations

Vacations are necessary for us to refresh, but as business owners, we don’t always give ourselves that break. Even if you don’t leave your home, it’s important to schedule a vacation. Three-day weekends are great for those over-stressed, over-scheduled business owners who don’t feel like they can take time off. And when you’re on vacation, turn off your work email, your business brain, and focus on fun and relaxation.

There are many ways to motivate yourself in business, but sometimes, it’s at a cost. You may spend more time scheduling, and you may end up spending money on purchases. The key is finding what works for you.
